Pope Francis made the stunning decision Friday to defrock Theodore McCarrick, the now ex-cardinal and former Archbishop of Washington over several cases of child sex abuse and harassment.

It's the harshest punishment yet for such a high-ranking member of the Church and comes less than a week before the Vatican's highly anticipated summit on abuse in the church.

Paul Murphy is a history professor and the Director of the Institute of Catholic Studies at John Carroll University. He tells KCBS Radio anchor Jon Bristow the Pope is hoping for a global moment of reckoning.
