Winter Weather In Spring Brings Hail, Thunderstorms And Snow To The Bay Area

April 16, 2018 - 2:59 pm

(KCBS Radio) - Unusually cold April weather is bringing thunderstorms, hail and snow to the Bay Area this morning, the National Weather Service reported.

Several locations received small hail, including San Jose, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Oakland and many cities in Santa Clara County.

Some East Bay roadways were coated with hail at about 9:30 a.m. and social media users shared photos of lawns blanketed in hail and one child attempting to sled down the road in Oakland.

Oakland Unified School District officials said none of the district's campuses would be closed today because of the hail.

It snowed on Mount Hamilton and the Diablo Range, and a weather service spokesman said any peaks that are above 3,000 feet could see more snow today.

The weather service issued an advisory for Santa Cruz County this morning reporting heavy showers and possible "dime sized" hail. They warned residents of lightning and said the storm might intensify.

Motorists are asked to drive slowly and be aware of their surroundings as weather patterns continue to shift throughout the day.
