The California Highway Patrol arrested a man who was allegedly sleeping behind the wheel of his self-driving car and failed a sobriety test early Friday morning in Redwood City.

Police claim that the 45-year-old driver from Los Altos was going 70 mph on a stretch of Highway 101 that has a 65 mph limit.

The officer pulled alongside the Tesla Model S and saw that the driver appeared to be asleep, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Art Montiel.

Lights and sirens didn't wake the man, which led the officer to get his attention with bumper-to-bumper contact, Montiel said.

"One of the officers basically ended up going in front of the vehicle and basically tried to slow it down" said Montiel.

After getting the driver to apparently safely pull over and take a sobriety test, he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Officers have not determined if the Model S was in autonomous mode at the time of the arrest.
