SAN FRANCISCO — The changes keep coming along Octavia Boulevard in San Francisco's Hayes Valley.

What was once a freeway before the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake is evolving yet again, this time into a more bicycling and pedestrian friendly roadway.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority voted Tuesday to ban cars from Octavia Boulevard between Hayes and Linden streets. A protected bike lane will be built in the area.

It is being madly debated after a decision Tuesday night by the MUNI board, which will include adding protected bike lanes and other measures to increase pedestrian safety.

“It’s a great thing. It’s a half a block. It’s hardly used by cars and it’ll expand the green space, so it’s wonderful. Hayes Valley is great,” one resident said about the closure.

If things go well, MUNI is expected to consider expanding the closure another block to reach Fell Street.
