Firefighters worry that they could be busy during the Fourth of July holiday due to the dangerous combination of fireworks being used near dry brush that could quickly go up in flames.

Fire personnel demonstrated on Tuesday the risks associated with using fireworks in a combustible environment at the Military Ocean Terminal.

"You can see out here that we have higher brush than we've seen in the past," said Contra Costa County incident commander Shane Nevneu as a sparkler was placed in the tall grass.

The flames quickly spread as recruits from Firefighter Academy 53 Wildland Fire training moved in and quickly extinguished the blaze.

"The lesson here," said Nevneu, "is safe and sane. Make sure you're aware of surroundings. Make sure you have water sources and adult supervision if you set off legal fireworks."

Several homes were damaged recently in Antioch by a fire started by children playing with fireworks.
