KCBS Radio was already one of the Bay Area's leading stations when the switch to all news programming happened in 1968. As it happens, a couple of young men who would become Bay Area broadcasting legends were working at the station before the changeover.

Mike Cleary--later the "Mike" of "Frank and Mike" fame--had an afternoon interview program, knowing his tenure would end when the all news format launched.

Barry Tompkins--still heard as a sports play-by-play broadcaster--had an off-air job and had been assured by the station manager that he had no future on the air.

Both sat down recently with KCBS Radio morning anchor Stan Bunger to remember radio and Bay Area life in 1968.
