(KCBS Radio) - Roseanne Barr's return to sitcom television proved to pay off. The revival of the hit comedy made it's hour-long debut on Tuesday with an estimated 18.4 million viewers tuning to see what's new in the Connor household.

It's been over 20 years since the orignial Roseanne left the ABC air. The first episode of the reboot took in 10% more viewers than the finale that aired in May 1997. In the age of "what's old is new again," Roseanne excels at a successful relaunch of an old series.

Like NBC's reboot Will & Grace, which premiere episode drew in 10.1 million viewers, quickly earning the same cast to sign on for another two seasons.

Other than John Goodman's character Dan Conner returning from "sitcom dead", Roseanne's storyline will also revolve around conflicting personal views and politics and how they as a family can resolve them. Barr, a Trump supporter weaves her personal beliefs in the thread of her show. Roseanne's sister Jackie, played by Academy Award-nominee Laurie Metcalf opposes the Trump Administration.

Barr says it was important to show how the Connor Family has the same issues as many American families face today. At the New York show premiere, Barr said "I saw it happening in all the families I know, so I thought, 'Well this is, you know, it's good, hopefully it will get people talking to each other.'"

One fan of the show tweeted his support and congratulated Barr with a phone call from the White House. On Thursday, Barr tweeted "It was a thrill to get a congratulatory phone call from The President of The United States of America,"

The entire original cast returned including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Michael Fishman and both Becky's Lecy Goranson and Sarah Chalke. The show is executive produced by Barr along with Sara Gilbert, Wanda Sykes and Whitney Cummings.

ABC's Roseanne airs Tuesdays and 8:00pm PST.
