The latest Disney/Marvel Studios movie Black Panther starring Chadwick Boseman is exceeding box office expectations over it’s opening weekend. As of Monday, the film is close to reaching $235 million in box office revenue, well over Disney’s forecast, according to Variety.

Directed by Oakland filmmaker Ryan Coogler, Black Panther has ranked fifth highest of all time, just behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $248 million. The film has already broke the record for the biggest President’s Day weekend from 2016’s release of Deadpool which took in $152 million.

According to comScore, Black Panther should milk-in $340 million for the 4-day period.

At a far second place, the family movie Peter Rabbit looks to multiply its earnings to just about $23 million.

Last week, the Fifty Shades sequel starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson opened on top bringing in $40 million, but on its second week, Fifty Shades Freed took a slight beating and submits to $19.4 million for third place.

In the next several weeks, it doesn’t seem like Black Panther will take a cat-nap anytime soon. Upcoming movies like the Jason Bateman/Rachel McAdams lead comedy Game Night and Natalie Portman’s sci-fi thriller Annihilation is looking to open between an average of $12 million to $15 million mark.

On tap for Marvel Studios is the highly anticipated Avengers sequel, Infinity War, which is considered a contender for Black Panther’s throne. The film also stars Boseman and is set to arrive in theaters on May 4th.
