Huge Pittsburg Fire Originated In Homeless Camp

June 24, 2019 - 8:36 am

A huge fire that destroyed a roofing supply company in Pittsburg on Sunday originated in a homeless encampment, according to fire officials in the East Bay.

The fire burned the Piedmont Lumber Company to the ground on Piedmont Way near Highway 4. The flames spread quickly due to strong winds, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

"This turned out to be a third-alarm fire," said Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill. "There was an incredibly large plume of smoke coming off of it that I've heard goes almost all the way to Stockton because of the winds."

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital and released Sunday night.
