SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) - A major medical association is pulling its annual convention out of San Francisco citing safety concerns.

Chronicle Insider and KCBS Radio's Phil Matier reports in Monday morning's Matier and Ross column this is the first time there has been an "out and out" cancellation over the issue of public safety on city streets.

Officials say the group told city officials while they love the city, association members said they were afraid to walk around the city amid the open drug use and threatening behavior.

Last year one board member was assaulted near Moscone Center.

Officials estimate the group's 5 day convention in San Francisco brings in 15,000 attendees and puts about $40 million into the local economy.
