Pedestrians Injured At Oakland International Airport

Unlicensed driver arrested in what authorities believe was an accident in front of Terminal One

Traffic came to a standstill near Oakland International Airport following an accident at Terminal 1 Tuesday evening.

KCBS Radio's Doug Sovern reported from the scene that four people were injured when a van apparently went onto the curb and hit pedestrians.  Two were hospitalized, though none deemed "seriously" hurt.

In a news conference broadcast live on KCBS Radio, a spokesperson from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department explained that it was an unlicensed driver behind the wheel.  His foot apparently became stuck on the accelerator just prior to the accident.

"This was an accident involving some sort of van right in front of Terminal One at Oakland International Airport," Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department summed up the incident.

"This all happened about 6:15 p.m. this evening," Kelly continued.  "There was a collision near Terminal One.  One of those vehicles went up onto the curb and struck three pedestrians and a fourth person was struck by a piece of luggage that was launched in their direction.  Two of those people have been hospitalized with what's described as slight injuries and the female person that was injured has more moderate injuries, she banged her head."

"We do have a person in custody," said Kelly.  "And that's because they are an unlicensed driver, a 54 year-old male who was driving.  He was driving the car that you see on top of the sidewalk near the front of the doors."

"I've learned that the driver who's unlicensed was not very familiar with the vehicle and had not operated a motor vehicle in quite some time so that may have played a factor in this as well."
