San Jose police on Monday arrested a suspect who was injured in an alleged fireworks explosion that forced authorities to evacuate roughly a dozen homes.

The suspect, John Meltzer, was arrested upon his release from a hospital and charged with possession of a destructive device.

Meltzer and another man were wounded in a garage where fireworks detonated on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The unidentified suspect remained hospitalized with "non-life threatening injuries," according to a San Jose police statement.

The explosion that was heard throughout the Evergreen neighborhood around 3 p.m. ripped the tips off two fingers of one the men in the garage on Moonflower Court.

The bomb squad from the San Jose police department investigated the garage and detonated the remaining pyrotechnics.
