The San Francisco ferry company Blue and Gold Fleet is celebrating its 40th year on the Bay.

The privately owned company, which has survived many economic ups and downs in San Francisco, was founded in May 1979.

"We started off with one vessel and today we're running 23 different vessels, carrying more than 4 million passengers; it's quite an anniversary for us," said Blue and Gold President Pat Murphy.

Blue and Gold offers excursion trips to the Golden Gate Bridge and operates commuter ferry service to San Francisco from Oakland, Alameda, Vallejo, South San Francisco, and Richmond.

"Every one of the vessels has a snack bar and beautiful views of San Francisco," said Murphy. "There's also benefits to the Bay Area to get cars off the roads and obviously off the bridges and help out with the commuter traffic."

San Francisco Mayor London Breed proclaimed Thursday to be Blue and Gold Fleet Day in the city.
