(KCBS Radio) - Fremont Police say they have solved one of the most high profile murder cases in that city's history. As KCBS Radio's Megan Goldsby reports the suspect was already in custody.

The Fremont Police Department never stopped working on the case of 18-year-old Michelle Xavier and her best friend 20-year-old Jennifer Duey who were found shot, stabbed and naked on the side of a road in February 1986.

"The last investigator who started mid-2000, right before he retired, handed me a box, put it on my desk and said 'alright kid, charged this case.' So I was like 'Okay!'"

Fremont cold case homicide detective Jacob Blass says it was DNA evidence that led them to 57-year-old David Emery Misch, who is already serving 18 years to life on murder charges from 1989.

Blass says this has been a very emotional time for the families.

"We've been, I've been in constant contact with the family. I talked with them and they were very ecstatic." Blass said. "There were tears shed on both sides of the table from their side as well as the Fremont PD side because we've been working this case for so long and with them."

Blass adds "We just wanted to be there to be able to give them the best news which is what we're going to do."
