(KCBS RADIO) - The DMV can now issue permits for testing self-driving vehicles without a human behind the wheel.

KCBS Radio's Megan Goldsby reports only one company has applied so far and the DMV can't name that company before their application has been approved.

"This is really the date we were looking forward to to see. So are any of these manufacturers actually ready to begin driver testing here in California." Jessica Gonzales with the DMV said. "So be interesting to see as we move forward, who is ready to begin applying,"

Gonzales says they set this date a long time ago as the state continues to try to lay out a framework for the future of self-driving cars.

Last month's deadly crash in Arizona didn't change that timeline.

"It had us definitely take notice. But you know we have our regulations in place here." Gonzales adds. "We have authority to suspend or revoke permits if we find that a permit holder is doing something that is unsafe in our state."

A senior scientist at the Rand Corporation says she believes we will see a lot of these applications to come within the next year. Though, it's hard to say what that means for how soon self-driving cars will actually be used by the general public.

"The vehicles are going to be put through their paces and who knows what the developers may discover about the readiness of their technology."
