BERKELEY — Dozens of boxes full of toys donated by the UC Berkeley police and other supporters were on their way to kids burned out of their homes in Northern Calironia on Thursday.

The wildly successful toy drive far exceeded what Capt. Alex Yao expected. He planned for a humble school supply and toy drive for children displaced by the Carr Fire in Redding in the summer and more recent Camp Fire in Paradise.

But donation of stuffed animals, bicycles, and coloring books poured in in after word spread on the internet.

"People droe here from Marin County and the South Bay to come over and donate," Yao said.

In all, 4,500 gifts filled a university bus and van on Thursday morning as they took off for Chico to be distributed.

Sgt. Sabrina Reich donated an Avengers art supply kit.

"I know that children love doing artwork and maybe after they've been through such a difficult time, it may help them work out some of their feelings through art," she siad.

University officials encouraged people to continue supporting organizations involved in ongoing relief work after the holiday.
