A series of grass fires that started in San Jose on Wednesday were likely acts of arson, fire department officials said.

There were four to five suspicious fires that threatened the Los Lagos Golf Course, a mobile home park and several homeless encampments near Coyote Creek, San Jose Fire Department Captain Mitch Matlow said.

The golf course's sprinkler system helped keep the flames at bay from the course while firefighters stopped the fires from reaching the trailer park, Matlow said.

"We got lines on that very quickly and none of those structures were damaged," he said to TV-station KPIX

Some of the homeless camps along the Coyote Creek were probably not as fortunate.

"I'm sure that there were some homeless encampments that burned," Matlow said. No injuries were reported.

The fires seemed that they were deliberately set, because they started within minutes. They also spread opposite the direction of the wind. The San Jose police department and arson investigators are looking into the incidents.
