A new sculpture in downtown San Jose cost a pretty penny...actually 200,000 pennies! KCBS Radio's Matt Bigler checked out the family of bears made almost entirely out of coins.

Passersby in downtown San Jose including this reporter were awestruck by the size and creativity of Ursa Mater, a giant mama bear and two cubs made almost entirely out of pennies.

John Baribald and Bigler stared at the thousands of copper colored coins pressed together vertically creating the effect of fur.
"Yeah, that's really what caught my eyes," Baribald said. "I thought it was real for from a distance and then when I got up there I was just amazed to find the pennies,"

"He just did such a meticulous job with the details. It's phenomenal. It really is." he adds.

Artists Mr. and Mrs. Ferguson of Alameda created "Mama Penny Bear" for the annual Burning Man Festival, last year. It's now in San Jose's Paseo de San Antonio through May. The city of San Leandro recently installed another Burning Man artwork. "Truth is beauty" a woman dancing naked near the San Leandro BART station.
