SAN FRANCISCO, — San Francisco supervisors have declared the National Rifle Association a "domestic terrorist organization."

“It is time to rid this country of the NRA and call them out for who they really are,” said Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who introduced the controversial resolution.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously supported her resolution on Tuesday and urged other cities, states and the federal government to do the same.

Stefani first introduced the resolution after a gunman opened fire at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in July, killing three people including two children. Since then, 38 people have been killed in three other highly publicized mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, Dayton, Ohio and Odessa, Texas.

“The NRA wants you to believe the solution to gun violence is more gun ownership,” said Stefani. “There are 393 million guns in the country, which means there are more guns than people. And we know if more guns meant more safety, America would be the safest country in the world.”

She blames the NRA for perpetuating gun violence.

“They buy off politicians, prevent common sense gun violence legislation, prevent gun violence research and tell us that it’s video games, movies or mental illness," she said. "Every country on this earth is exposed to these issues and influences in equal measure, and yet only the United States faces this kind of mass gun violence. The difference is guns.”

Stefani also called out Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for refusing to call votes on gun violence measures passed by the House of Representatives, saying he was influenced by the NRA’s contributions to his campaigns.

In a statement, the NRA cast criticism on city leaders.

“This ludicrous stunt by the Board of Supervisors is an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and skyrocketing petty crime," the statement said. "The board is wasting taxpayer dollars to declare five million law abiding Americans domestic terrorists and it’s shameful.”
