FREMONT (KCBS Radio) - The California Highway Patrol is still investigating that triple fatal collision on 880 in Fremont Tuesday night that may have been caused by a driver who was high. As KCBS Radio's Matt Bigler reports, officials are concerned about an increase in the number of marijuana related DUI.

"Driving under the influence of marijuana is the same as driving under the influence of alcohol." CHP Officer Manuel Leal says both substances impaired driving and slow reaction times, can lead to horrible collisions like the one Tuesday night that killed three people on 880 in Fremont.

The CHP is seeing an increase in marijuana related DUIs. Now that pot is legal in California. "Absolutely concerning especially after you you come upon a scene like this and you could have all been avoided."

The number of nighttime weekend drivers in the U.S. with marijuana in their systems jumped 50% percent between 2007 and 2014 according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Melissa Aguilar in Fremont doesn't think pot should have been legalized for adults in the first place. "As long as it's legal people are going to do this," Aguilar says. "The traffic accidents are going to keep getting worse."

Marijuana advocates say people who use should know their limits and not drive while impaired.
