(KCBS Radio) - Teens are poisoning themselves by vaping. KCBS Radio's Margie Shafer has details of the just-published findings in the journal "Pediatrics".

One hundred Bay Area teens were put to the test to determine the dangers of vaping.

"So we went right to the source and tested the actual urine of teenagers so we could see what levels are toxicants that they were absorbing." says UCSF Professor of Pediatrics and the study's lead author Dr. Marc Rubenstein.

Those who had vaped had significant levels of potentially hazardous chemicals, but not as high as those who vaped and smoked.

"Some of the chemicals that are used in the products to keep the nicotine in liquid form are what is causing the chemical toxic." Dr. Rubenstein said.

Propylene glycol and glycerin which are safe at room temperature, become toxic in the heating process inherent to any vape pen. These chemicals were found in the bodies of teens who used e-cigarettes without nicotine. Dr. Marc Rubenstein also said teens should not be using these products at all.

Flavored juice left significant amounts of acrylonitrile, used widely in the manufacturing of synthetic rubber.
