SAN FRANCISCO —Jeanine Nicholson has been chosen to run the San Francisco Fire Department, making her the first LGBTQ chief and second woman to lead the department.

Mayor London Breed announced on Wednesday that Nicholson, a 25-year veteran and current deputy chief, would replace Joanne Hayes-White who is retiring.

In 2009, Nicholson incurred second-degree burns while fighting a fire started by an arsonist on Fulton Street. Five other firefighters were hurt that day.

Nicholson has also survived breast cancer.

“I am honored and humbled to take on the position of fire chief for the San Francisco Fire Department,” said Nicholson, in a statement. “San Francisco is an incredible city with unique challenges resulting from our dense urban environment and our ever-present earthquake risk. I am committed to meeting these challenges and continuing the work to make our City safer for all residents."
