Man Dies After Jumping In Napa River In Oxbow Preserve

May 21, 2018 - 2:42 pm

NAPA (KCBS Radio) - A man died after he jumped into the Napa River in the Oxbow Preserve open space area in Napa on Saturday, police said.

A witness saw a man in his underwear running erratically along the riverbank in the preserve on McKenzie Drive around 8:50 p.m., Napa police Sgt. Todd Shulman said.

The witness said the man jumped in the water and yelled for help a short time later. Police officers arrived and threw a rope where they believed the man was, but he couldn't reach it because of vegetation along the riverbank, Shulman said.

The Napa Fire Department responded with a boat and a rescue swimmer, but the man was unconscious and unresponsive when he was removed from the water, Shulman said.

The man was not known to police and he had no identification with him. He is described as a man in his 20s or 30s, Shulman said.
