Major Stories: An Attempted Assassination

Gerald Ford's Near Miss In San Francisco

May 22, 2018 - 2:30 am

When President Gerald Ford visited San Francisco on September 22, 1975, it had been barely two weeks since Lynette Fromme had aimed a gun at him in Sacramento's Capitol Park. Her attempt to kill the President failed when the gun misfired.

Incredibly, Ford would be targeted again as he left the St. Francis Hotel. KCBS Radio reporter George McManus created a memorable description of the scene: "My God! There's been a shot!" Sara Jane Moore's attempt to kill the president failed; she'd missed once when an ex-Marine named Oliver Sipple intervened and forced her second shot away from the President.

KCBS Radio would throw all its resources at the story for the next several hours. Our audio here is a compendium of the station's coverage introduced by Larry Cooper, who served for several years as a KCBS Radio anchor and eventually, News Director.
