Oakland Baker Peddles His Loaves Directly To Customers' Homes

OAKLAND — An Oakland baker has opened his own bread-making business with deliveries made by bicycle.

Lucio Mejia founded Oakland Bread Studio this year where he makes fresh loaves of sourdough bread in his home kitchen and then delivers them to neighbors by bike.

“It takes a lot of technique to do it well,” he said about making bread. “One of the fun things about bread - the first loaf of bread you make at home, you’re going to love it.”

Mejia has been baking for more than a decade. He worked at local bakeries in the past, but felt limited to what he could and could not make on the job.

“Doing it out of my home allows me to have a lot of creative control and be able to try things that I maybe wouldn’t be able to try if I was working in a larger production bakery,” he said.

Opening his business has also provided him with the right balance of work and family time with his young children.

“Having it be small scale means that I can make a lot of decisions that prioritize my family while still trying to make bread as well as I’ve ever made it before,” he said.

Each week, Mejia boxes up about 30 loaves of bread for orders placed online and delivers it to his neighbors.

“I like delivering it to people who hopefully get a lot of satisfaction out of it,” he said. “It’s something you can make sandwiches with, you can make toast with, use it for croutons or something that’s great on its own.”
