VERNON, CA (KCBS RADIO) — Lisette Gaviña is a 4th generation coffee roaster at F.Gaviña & Sons Inc. The Gaviña family's coffee story began in 1870 in the mountains of Southern Cuba. After the family's arrival in Los Angeles in 1963, they carried on a tradition of passion for producing gourmet coffee by founding F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. in 1967. While their focus has shifted over the years from cultivation to coffee roasting and wholesale distribution, the end goal has remained the same: creating fine coffee—and doing it the right way from bean to cup.

I met with Lisette Gaviña recently, 4th generation coffee roaster at their family plant in Vernon, California. I toured the 200,000+ square foot factory, the waft of coffee at every turn. As I walked through the plant it was evident this "is" a family business. I met Uncles and Aunties, cousins and Lisette's father. Most importantly the care the family takes of their employees, like "family" - is heartwarming. Lisette and her family know more than their employee's names, they know their stories too. They have English-Spanish classes on site with a teacher on staff to help educate employees, prepare them for citizenship interviews and more.

My factory tour was full of wow and wonder. I was wowed at the high tech and hands-on combination at play and wondered how they have remained the best in the coffee business? Their families steadfast commitment to quality and control is a big part of that story. So where to find F.Gaviña coffee? If you shop at Costco and see Don Francisco coffee or enjoy coffee at McDonald's in SoCal it's most likely F.Gaviña and Sons. They are everywhere. More recently they launched a cool brew coffee and even coffee espresso pods "Cafe La Llave" for the modern coffee consumer.

From humble beginnings fleeing Cuba six decades ago and starting up their coffee business again in 1967 they have come a long way and stayed true to their mission: "making good coffee and doing it the right way from bean to cup."

Enjoy my conversation with 4th generation coffee roaster Lisette Gaviña who talked with passion and pride about her family and their business that makes people happy daily through coffee, really good coffee.

Wake up and smell the Gaviña coffee.

Cheers, Liam!
