(KCBS RADIO) - A Bay Area-native, Josh Leavy, was born with brewing in his blood. His great grandfather, Mr. Miguel Gonzalez, formed the first industrial brewery, Mexicali Brewery in Baja, California in 1923. Although Josh's fascination with brewing beer began with his ancestors, his passion started in college after spending time at local brewery, Butte Creek  doing research for a class project. Josh fell in love with the camaraderie that comes along with brewing.
After his graduation from Chico State University, Josh landed a sales job utilizing his business degree, but always maintained a passion for craft beer through homebrewing – testing out his brews on friends and family.
His moment of clarity came when a friend of his purchased a bar in San Francisco and wanted to carry some of his beers. Unfortunately, he wasn’t properly licensed at the time, but it inspired him to pick up the phone and call the local ABC office and get the process started. Knowing that there was a demand for his beer was just the confidence boost he needed to quit his sales job and focus full time on beer. While he doesn’t have a formal beer education, he has done a lot of hands-on training from production sites where he was incredibly privileged to learn directly from some amazing people in the industry. They allowed him to work alongside them and they shared tips and tricks for making great craft beer and how to be consistent.
In 2012, San Francisco Brewing Co. was born and is dedicated to creating delicious and easy-to-drink beer that fosters community, celebration, and local artistry. For six years, Josh grew the business doing everything from clerical work and sales, to forecasting demand and looking to the future.
In spring of 2018, Josh along with his wife Jennifer and brother Aaron opened a 12,000 square foot production brewery, restaurant, and beer garden in historic Ghirardelli Square. We met there recently for our Foodie Chap chat - over a few brews of course.

For the full on “tank to tap” experience look no further than San Francisco Brewing Co. These super tasty brews from fruity to sour to tarty reflect the region we live in, each one telling a local SF story;

  • Coit Tower Kolsch
  • Hazy Valley Ipa
  • Ghirardelli Black Lager

The notes on each are below.

Enjoy my interview over brews with owner Josh & brewmaster Justin Boehle (formerly Sierra Nevada Brew Co.) When you visit this new Ghirardelli Square hotspot, please come for the beers but stay for the comfort food, local  music & late night fun around the fire pits.

Cheers and see you at the brewery!

Coit Tower Kolsch - 5 OZ - $3 | 16 OZ - $8
This is a twist on our traditional, German-Style Kolsch recipe with 200 lbs of pureed Blood Oranges added during the brewing process. The zesty, Blood Orange aroma will be apparent from the initial sip. Tart and juicy, this beer will keep your taste buds tingling! 4.9% abv  //  26 ibus

Hazy Valley IPA - 5 OZ - $3 | 16 OZ - $8
A New England Style IPA, made with malted barley, wheat, and oats. A blend of progressive fruit forward hops carry this beer’s aromas of passionfruit, guava, and pineapple. With a foggy and cloudy body, this unfiltered IPA will give you a big mouthfeel without the bitter bite. 6.9% abv  //  58 ibus

Ghirardelli Black Lager - 5 OZ - $3 | 16 OZ - $8
Great introductory beer for those less accustomed to dark beer. This very drinkable lager has flavors and aromas of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and vanilla. It is cold aged in a conditioning tank for 35 days with real Ghirardelli cocoa nibs. 5.0% abv  //  26 ibus BARBARY COAST BITTER
