(KCBS RADIO) - Fashion, food, philanthropy, and furious beats: it's all in a day's work for San Francisco icon Juanita MORE! A celebrated drag performer, fashion muse, fundraiser, and gourmand, Juanita has been a force of creativity in her hometown and beyond for thirty years. She now adds restauranteur to her list of accomplishments as she takes on the food & beverage responsibilities of 620 Jones in San Francisco's Tenderloin, now known as MORE!jones. Chef Cory Armenta and food stylist Cole Church join Juanita at the restaurant.

Come any night but especially Sundays for brunch & Wednesdays for family night. Juanita hopes people will invite an LGBTQ elder to join you or your group for dinner on family night. "It's an opportunity to share a meal and learn from our elders, learn our history, share stories but mostly share a meal with those often left behind."

In 2011, the San Francisco LGBT Pride Celebration Committee recognized Juanita for her "outstanding artistic contribution to the LGBTQ community."

As a DJ and party personality, Juanita continues to reach out to the next generation of queer youth with club nights across the country, including her weekly party Booty Call Wednesdays in San Francisco's historic Castro District. Her annual Pride Party has the widely-held reputation of being "the best party of the year," and has raised over $150,000 for various local non-profit organizations serving the LGBTQ community.  It's a party I never miss.

A true style icon, Juanita has worked extensively with designer Mr. David, creating a wardrobe collection that includes over 1,500 couture pieces that have been shown at SF MOMA and the de Young Museum, in addition to several other community organizations.

Whatever medium she works in, Juanita MORE! inspires those around her to make a positive difference in their lives and in their communities, doing it all with a timeless elegance and an innovative spirit.
I had the joy of dining at MORE!jones recently - the Latin-Mediterranean menu offers what the garden grows with fresh salads and seasonal offerings. The Heirloom Tomato Panzenella is a standout with:
Feral Heart Farm tomatoes, arugula, balsamic & honey dressing, housemade croutons

Juanita also pulls from her roots with recipes passed down from her Mom and Grandma. The MORE!burger is more of everything on a soft sourdough roll: 1/2 pound natural beef steak, poblano chile rellano, jalapeños en escabeche, cilantro, tomato & aioli
The cocktails are knockout too.
I had the Juanita More! - a fruity, zesty cocktail that, like Juanita herself is a kick in the pants. The recipe below.

The "Juanita MORE!" Cocktail
The "Juanita MORE!" Cocktail


  • 4 blackberries / plus one for garnish
  • 1/4 of a freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 ounces of Jameson Irish Whiskey
  • 3 dashes of Angostura bitters
  • Splash of Bundaberg ginger beer
  • Ice

Gently muddle the blackberries in a pint glass. Squeeze the lemon juice into the glass and add the Jameson and bitters. Shake well and double-strain over a tall iced glass.
