The former Oakland Raider joined star chefs and winemakers in Miami this week for Culinary Cook off, a pre Super Bowl fundraiser for the CIA - Culinary Institute of America. As wine flowed so too did the conversation about this year’s Super Bowl with San Francisco 49ers V Kansas City Chiefs. Chefs Charlie Palmer and Michael Mina weighed in on the chances of a WIN for the 49ers here in Miami this weekend. Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott were in the wings as the good times rolled at the CIA fundraiser. They of course were “GO NINERS” all the way!

Charles Woodson wines were poured alongside fellow NorCal wines from JAM Cellars, Silver Oak and Twomey. The football star turned winemaker shared the wines notes behind his popular 2017 Intercept Red Blend.

Enjoy our wine fuelled conversation and GO NINERS!

Winemaking Notes:
Our Intercept Red Blend is a combination of some of our favorite vineyards in Paso Robles. Petite Sirah and Zinfandel are at the heart of this blend highlighting two varieties that do well in Paso Robles. Each vintage we use Petite Sirah to add structure and Zinfandel for ripe fruit flavors. Vintage to vintage we will incorporate other varietals and districts highlighting the best of the vintage. Aged in French and Eastern European oak for 18 months.

Food Pairing:
Pair with smoked meats, burgers, Spanish style tapas.

Vintage Notes:
The 2017 vintage began with above average rainfall as the Paso Robles area began to rebound from drought. The wet start was followed by average temperatures that lasted through June. Higher than average winds during bloom affected fruit set in some areas of Paso Robles. Harvest was a few days later than average this year, compressing our growing season. A severe heat spike in September with highs of 115 degrees halted maturation, delaying harvest for about two weeks. Temperatures became more seasonal throughout October until a frost in some areas of Paso Robles in late October created more challenges for our harvest. Overall, the 2017 harvest was an oddly paced, challenging harvest in Paso Robles. In spite of difficult conditions, the vintage shows excellent maturity and depth of flavor.
