Thinking about a winter getaway, but looking to stick close to the Bay Area? Look no farther than Palm Springs. KCBS Radio's Kim Wonderley has a guide to visiting the stylish retreat.

You don't need to travel all the way to Hawaii to find swimming pool weather. Palm Springs is happening with over 300 sunny days in the average year.

Flying non-stop into Palm Springs from SFO is a quick flight that last about one hour and 10 minutes. Palm Springs' airport is smack in the middle of town.

The desert oasis has long been a popular destination for golfers. There are more than 100 courses dotting the Coachella Valley. But it has a lot more to offer than a warm, sunny day on the links.

It's a hiker's paradise too. There are great trails in the nearby Indian Canyons to the renowned Joshua Tree National Park, which is less than an hour away by car.

The LGBTQ community is at home here with many resorts that cater to them along with an active bar scene.

The food scene has grown in leaps and bounds in Palm Springs. Restaurants like Spencer's, Tropicale, Copley's, Cheeky's and Trio are serving to packed houses.

Accommodations come in every form. Renting a house with a private pool is a popular option, but there are also revamped mid-century inns. Check out the beautiful Spanish colonial cottages that make up the Andalusian Court or go mid-century-centric with the Orbit Inn, the Skylark Inn, or the Ace Hotel. The sleek, new Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel is worth checking out downtown too.

Fans of mid-century architecture and design can treat Palm Springs like a three-dimensional textbook of this era. The premiere yearly event is Modernism Week which happens Feb 14-24. This is chance to take architectural and home tours, check out Frank Sinatra's desert pad and attend cocktail parties, films, lectures and enjoy the winter hot spot in desert that is Palm Springs.
