SAN JOSE - Those blue Ford GoBikes that we’ve grown used to on Bay Area streets will soon be a thing of the past. Lyft is rebranding the whole service as "Bay Wheels".

The change comes with a new line of electric powered bicycles. At an event to roll out the bikes, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo took a test ride, and says that getting more of these bikes on the roads will be a good thing for San Jose.

“We are thrilled with the e-bikes for lots of good reasons, “ said Liccardo. “Obviously we want to continue to build out our wonderful bike infrastructure, but what e-bikes also do is enable folks who may have a little challenge to be able to access bicycles, and the bike infrastructure."

The old pedal powered bikes are sticking around, but are getting a colorful makeover from local artists.

Lyft is starting by introducing these bikes in San Jose, but they’re planning to expand to San Francisco and the East Bay over the next month.

Lyft took its electric bikes off the road in April after reports of injuries caused by a braking problem.
