Nancy Pelosi appears likely to become the next speaker of the House after voters swept the Democratic Party into control of the lower house of Congress, according to projections.

"A Democratic Congress will work toward solutions that bring us together because we've all had enough of division," said Pelosi on Tuesday night after news organizations, including CBS News, projected that Democrats had won the House. "American people want peace. They want results."

Pelosi, of San Francisco, was the first woman to be speaker when she previously held the position from 2007 to 2011.

Earlier on Tuesday, she exuded confidence about the Democrats' chance of winning at the polls.

"It's just a question of what size the victory will be," said Pelosi, adding that she was "100 percent sure of victory."

Although she must be selected by the members of Congress, she is poised to become the most powerful member of the House again.
