SAN JOSE (KCBS Radio) -- VTA crews worked through the night to repair damage done when a VTA train struck a car that had gone around downed crossing gates.

Two men died in the Sunday crash, and the VTA train and trackwork sustained significant damage. VTA is running a bus bridge to get riders around the damaged trackwork. The  bus bridge runs between the Convention Center and Fruitdale stations on the Mountain View-Winchester light rail line.

San Jose Police said the crossing gates at Lincoln and Auzerais Avenues were functioning properly and were in the down position as the VTA train approached.

VTA said repairs could take several days to complete.

A photo taken by KCBS Radio reporter Tim Ryan shows debris swept to the side of the tracks, apparently including a wheelchair that was in the car struck by the VTA train.
