President Trump criticized the amount of money California has spent in its attempt build a high-speed train line while defending his plans to build a wall along the border with Mexico.

"The failed Fast Train project in California, where the cost overruns are becoming world record setting, is hundreds of times more expensive than the desperately needed Wall!" Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Gov. Gavin Newsom had announced that he would no longer seek to build the railway from San Francisco to Los Angeles as proposed by his predecessor, Jerry Brown. Instead, Newsom will focus on a Central Valley route from Merced to Bakersfield.

A recent estimate predicted the full train project would cost at least $77 billion.

When Trump campaigned for president in 2016, he promised that Mexico would pay between $8 billion and $12 billion. More recently, he has sought $5.7 billion for the barrier.

Trump also complained in a separate tweet that California officials were leading the court battle to invalidate his national emergency declaration to secure billions of dollars to fund the wall that were not appropriated by Congress.

On Monday, 16 states, including California sued Trump, saying that his use of emergency powers was a “flagrant disregard of fundamental separation of powers principles," according to Politico
