SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- San Francisco police said Wednesday that thieves apparently used a vehicle to smash their way into the Yves St. Laurent store on Geary Street before making off with an undetermined amount of high-end merchandise.

A large window was shattered and skid marks outside provided evidence that a vehicle had been used as a battering ram. In something of a mystery, a wheel and tire were left behind on the sidewalk.

From the street, it was apparent that purses, shoes and backpacks had been removed from display shelves. Store employees, who would not speak on the record, indicated a substantial amount of merchandise had been stolen. They said many of the items are expensive; a small YSL backpack retails for $1,000 or more.

Employees also said the store was equipped with surveillance cameras an information from those cameras was being reviewed.
