MARTINEZ (KCBS Radio) -- The Community Warning System was activated for parts of Contra Costa County after an incident at the Shell Refinery in Martinez early Friday morning

The incident happened around 2:30 am, sending acrid odors into the air.

The refinery called a Level 2-- or lower level -- alert, posting on Facebook that odors may be reaching nearby neighborhoods. The fumes may cause people with respiratory sensitivities to experience skin, eye, nose and throat irritation.

Authorities have not issued a "shelter in place" order, but have told people with pre-existing health issues that they may want to remain indoors "out of an abundance of caution".

In a Facebook post, the Shell Refinery said, "To this point we have not seen anything on our fence line monitors, or through our community monitoring.  We are communicating with County Health and will continue to provide updates as the situation resolves itself."
