Police in Santa Clara shot and injured a suspect who had allegedly stolen a car and led officers on a chase on Sunday.

San Jose police, who are investigating the shooting, claim that the suspect Manuel Gabriel Rico, 38, crashed the stolen GMC Jimmy into several police cars in San Jose after a chase through city streets and on a freeway around 5 a.m yesterday.

An unnamed Santa Clara officer fired at Rico, the San Jose police department statement said. Although he was struck, Rico fled on foot until a police dog captured him, according to police.

Rico was hospitalized with "non-life threatening injuries," police said. Officers allegedly found a stolen, loaded handgun in his car.

There was a warrant for Rico's arrest on a felony charge stemming from an alleged assault with a firearm, police said.
