SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -  Some loved them and some hated them. As of Tuesday, you can't find them anywhere. The motorized scooters or E-Scooters that were all over the streets of San Francisco for several weeks had a deadline and it has come and gone. For the companies offering them, they had to take them back off the streets.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesman Paul Rose told KPIX 5, start-up companies Lime, Bird and Spin will be able to apply for permits to bring the scooters back. But they will have to follow new city rules, which call for riders to wear helmets, to travel in the bike lane and to park the scooters so they're not blocking sidewalks.

Rose says it's a safety matter "We want to ensure that people who uses scooters, can operate safely and people who are walking along the sidewalk can do that safely."

There's also talk about making sure that the privacy protections are in place for the scooter rental apps. All of this still to be worked out.

Rose saying the scooters could be back legally on San Francisco streets within about a month.
