SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- Five years of construction work is over--and San Francisco's newest landmark officially opens Tuesday.

The Salesforce Tower is over a thousand feet tall, making it the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. It's also 200 feet taller than the Transamerica Pyramid.

Salesforce  CEO Marc Benioff plans to open the building with a speech focusing on urban problems like homelessness, litter, and low-performing schools. Benioff and his wife Lynne have been major contributors to programs aimed at dealing with those issues.

Salesforce, the San Francisco-based cloud software company, is leasing more than 700,000 square feet of office space in the skyscraper.

And Tuesday night, they switch on the light show. The huge LED panels atop the Salesforce Tower will transmit a public art installation known as "Day for Night" starting a little after 8pm Monday.

The Tuesday morning view from the top was limited by dense Bay Area fog.
