SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- One's a "clown". The other's a specific clown: "Pennywise" from the Stephen King novel and movie "It".

President Trump's lambasting of California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom at a Las Vegas political rally Thursday night drew an immediate response from Newsom, who's running for Governor.

"How about this clown in California who's running for governor," Mr. Trump asked his Nevada audience. "He wants open borders and then he wants to give them health care, education, everything."

Newsom wasted little time clapping back. His Twitter post read, "lol, hi @realDonaldTrump. Interesting description coming from the guy who is literally locking up kids like Pennywise."

The Newsom retort came on the same day his latest TV ad dropped. That spot focuses on Newsom's plans for health care, education and job opportunities.

Less than a month ago, before the insults started to fly, Newsom told the Bay Area Council he's not opposed to working with the White House.
