OAKLAND (KCBS Radio) -- A man is under arrest and an Oakland police officer has been hospitalized after a bizarre incident in the Oakland Hills Wednesday morning.

Oakland Police say a vehicle left Golf Links Road at a high rate of speed, flew over a garage located below the roadway, and slammed into a tree. Investigating officers say an occupied home sat behind the tree.

The driver survived the crash and made it out of the vehicle and back to Golf Links Road. Auhtorities say police and paramedics responded, but when they tried to assist the man, he turned violent.

Oakland Police say the man assaulted first responders, at one point using the ambulance's backboard as a weapon.

He was eventually subdued and arrested. An Oakland police officer, whose name has not been released, was taken to the hospital with what were described as significant injuries.
