SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- Tens of thousands of commuters rush through San Francisco's new Salesforce Transbay Transit Center every week day. It's a good bet that few have taken the time to sit down and play a game of Scrabble or Battleship.

But they could. A cart full of board games sits in the park atop the transit center. A foosball table sits next to it. It's all there for park visitors to use free of charge, on the "honor system".

The stack of games is designed to appeal to all ages with classics like Chutes and Ladders and more modern titles like Apples to Apples. There are checkers sets and playing cards too.

"We're working on a few things to give people small reasons to to kind of stay in the park a little bit longer, rather than just passing through," said park program manager Rodrigo Rodarte.

Will it work?  That remains to be seen.  Charlie Dallas, a visitor from Dallas, was asked by KCBS Radio reporter Jeffrey Schaub if he planned to grab a game. "No," said Dallas, "I'd rather go find a cup of coffee."
