BERKELEY (KCBS Radio) --With less than a week to go until Election Day, a new poll suggests gubernatorial frontrunner Gavin Newsom may get what he's hoping for come November.

That would be a Republican opponent.  The latest poll of likely voters from the U-C Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies shows Republican John Cox with 20 percent support--7 percent ahead of former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who's showing up at 13 percent. That puts Villaraigosa in a virtual tie with another Republican--Assemblyman Travis Allen.

Newsom is running at 33 percent, and has made it clear he'd prefer to line up against a Republican rather than a fellow Democrat in November.

The top two June vote-getters--regardless of party affiliation--advance to the November general election.

Complete results of the IGC poll, which surveyed likely voters betyween May 22 and May 28:

Gavin Newsom  33%

John Cox  20%

Antonio Villaraigosa 13%

Travis Allen  12%

John Chiang 7%

Delaine Eastin 4%

Undecided 7%
