A wildfire erupted in Mendocino County Monday, spreading quickly overnight and prompting evacuations.

The Moose Fire is burning in the McNab Ranch area along Highway 101 between Hopland and Ukiah.

The blaze covers 225 acres and is 25% contained, Cal Fire said Tuesday. It is burning in a steep, remote area with heavy vegetation, which is presenting a challenge to firefighters.

Residents along Valley View Road, Bus McGall Road and Moose Road were ordered to evacuate Monday afternoon, but those orders have since been reduced to a warning.

Witnesses have reported seeing smoke from the fire as far south as Sonoma County.

Over 450 firefighters poured in to the scene overnight and Cal Fire plans to maintain a heavy presence Tuesday. One firefighter sustained a minor injury.
