SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- Weary San Francisco-bound motorists got a little good news Monday morning with the re-opening of a block of Fremont Street beneath the damaged Salesforce Transbay Transit Center.

After Sunday's announcement that the street would open in time for the Monday morning rush, commuters began to return to their normal patterns.

By 8:30am, KCBS Radio traffic anchor Kim Wonderley noted, "Things are definitely looking better on the Bay Bridge and at that Fremont Street exit."

One motorist who had been supplying daily updates about his trip to San Francisco noted a dramatically quicker trip across the Bay Bridge, and free-flowing traffic on San Francisco streets that were clogged during the Fremont Street closure.

It's not exactly "business as usual" on Fremont Street, though.  Traffic between Howard and Mission Streets is forced to divert around a pair of temporary support columns, installed to shore up the cracked beams in the massive Transbay Transit Center above. Those columns will stay in place until a final repair of the beams is competed.
