FREMONT (KCBS Radio) -- Fremont police said a man was shot and killed by officers late Thursday night after what they called a "completely unprovoked" attack on an officer in his patrol car.

The incident began near the emergency entrance to Washington Hospital. At a briefing for reporters Friday morning, police said an officer on routine patrol was shot at as he drove through the area.

The officer made a U-turn, grabbed the service rifle from his car, and returned fire. Authorities said two other officers responded. When they arrived, they saw the suspect on the ground.

According to police, the suspect then crawled toward a handgun, then raised it toward the officers. More shots were fired and 17 minutes after the incident began, the man was declared dead.

Authorities have not released the name of the dead man, nor the names of the officers involved. They promised to make more information about the incident availabe, including video from officer-worn cameras, within 24 to 48 hours.
