SAN JOSE (KCBS Radio) -- Police were working Monday morning to understand what led to an explosion of violence in a house near the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

What began with reports of shots fired on Sunday night ended when police entered the home on Monday morning to find three people dead. Two others who'd been taken from the scene earlier died at the hospital.

Police described the situation as four homicides and a suicide.  The home on Habbitts Court, near the intersection of Umbarger and Senter Roads, was surrounded by police vehicles, including heavily-armored vehicles called to the scene when the SJPD MERGE unit was deployed.

While details were scant, police said there had apparently been some sort of gathering at the house when the gunfire began. Many people fled the house. Eventually, police arrived and a standoff ensued during which "flash-bang" grenades were deployed.

Around dawn on Monday, police entered the home to find the three bodies.
