OAKLAND (KCBS Radio) --  Fire erupted Wednesday morning in Oakland.

The fire was burning in a warehouse at Hawley Street and 72nd Avenue, behind the Coliseum BART station parking lot.

The Oakland Fire Department called a second alarm within minutes of the arrival of first crews on the scene. Firefighters said the building was being used by a painting contractor to store combustible materials.

A tall column of smoke was visible for miles on a clear morning.

The building was described as a wood-frame structure clad in corrugated-metal siding

BART said the fire was not affecting service, although some spaces in the Coliseum station parking lot were being used to stage fire equipment.

Oakland Fire reported power lines were down in the immediate area although PG&E's outage map did not show any reported issues with electrical service.
