BYRON (KCBS Radio) -- Firefighters are dealing with strong winds as they try to extinguish a series of grassland fires that broke out Wednesday afternoon in the Altamont Pass area.

CalFire has dubbed the complex of 7 separate fires the "Grant Fire" and said flames had consumed 500 acres by nightfall Wednesday night. The first of the fires was reported at 2 pm Wednesday in the vicinity of Grant LIne Road and Mountain House Road.

KCBS Radio reporter Tim Ryan says CalFire reported nearly 80% containment of the fires by daybreak on Thursday. No cause has been given.

Wind gusts of nearly 60 MPH raked the area overnight.

No homes had burned as of Thursday morning, although a number of vehicles and outbuildings reportedly burned. The flames charred outbuildings at the Lazy M Marina in Byron and came close to a number of boats stored there.
