SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS Radio) -- Former Amador Valley High School and UC Berkeley swimmer Catherine Breed completed a crossing of the English Channel on Monday

Breed made the swim from Dover to the French coast in 9 hours, 57 minutes.

The women's record for the Channel crossing is 7:25:15, set by Yvetta Hlavacova in 2006.

Breed lives in Alameda. After her swim career at Cal, which included competition as a member of the US National swim team, she turned to open-water swimming. She's a member of San Francisco's Dolphin Club who says the cold water and beautiful views attract her to open-water events.

Breed set a record last September by swimming the length of Lake Tahoe in under 9 hours.

She helped pay for her English Channel attempt with a GoFundMe campaign that raised $5,760.
